MATLAB Installation Tutorial


  1. Go to Network Software ( to download MATLAB.
  2. Log in with your PID and password.
  3. Expand the MATLAB item in the list of software and select the latest version of MATLAB for your operating system.
  4. Check "Yes" and click on "Accept Agreement" to accept the license.
  5. Print the activation key as you will need it later.
  6. Click on "Continue".
  7. Click on the link in the center of the screen that says "Download"
  8. The download should automatically start; choose to save the file to your desktop or some other convenient place. If the download did not automatically start, it may have been blocked by your web-browser. In Internet Explorer look below your address bar for thin yellow line and click on it. Choose "download file."
  9. Once the file has finished downloading, right click on the file and choose "Extract all.
  10. Open up the extracted folder and double click on the file called "Setup."
  11. Make sure you are still connected to the internet before starting the install.
  12. Select the "Install automatically using the Internet (recommended)" and hit "Next" to continue.
  13. If you have not installed MATLAB before:
    1. Select the "Need to create a MathWorks Account" button and hit "Next" to continue.
    2. Sign up for an account using your Virginia Tech E-mail Address. If you do not use your VT E-mail address, activation will not work.
    3. Hit next to continue.
  14. If you have installed a previous version of MATLAB, log in with your MathWorks account (VT E-mail and MathWorks password) to continue.
    1. To reset your password go to: and enter your email. MathWorks will e-mail your password to your VT email. It may take up to an hour to receive your new password. Wait to receive the password before continuing.
  15. Enter the activation code from Network Software and click "Next."
  16. Select the defaults for the next three screens: Select installation path, select modules to be installed (all selected by default), and confirm selection. Select next to continue. 
  17. Click "Install" when the option is available. This should take about 10 minutes.
    1. During the installation, when a "File Extension Warning" dialog is shown, select "Yes to All."
  18. When the installation has completed, you will need to activate MATLAB, make sure "Activate Matlab" is checked and clock "Activate". 
  19. When you get to the screen that says "Provide User Name" you will need to look up your Windows User Name. Your installation will not work if you do not use the correct username.
    1. Click on Start in the bottom left hand corner of your desktop.
    2. Click on Control Panel.
    3. Click on User Accounts.
    4. Make sure the name in your MATLAB installation next to "Windows User Name" is the same as the current user account. For most people, this should already be correct. If it is different you will need to change the name in the "Windows User Name" box. Once they are the same, hit "Next" to continue.
  20. Click "Finish" Once you get the "Activation is complete" message, you can start using MATLAB!

Note: If you visit MathWorks and are asked to update your profile, select "Academic Use (including campus/site license use)" when prompted "How will you use MathWorks Software".  If you select "Student Use of MATLAB and Simulink Student Version", you will not be able to activate your MATLAB license.
